How effective are virus scans in detecting viruses?

I am having a few problems with my computer (it is running slower, weird messages appearing, internet kicking me out). I have McAfee and in a recent scan a trojan was detected and removed. I also have anti-spyware and the scan reveals nothing. Does anyone have experience with McAfee? I want to know if it is effective in finding viruses or if I should take my computer in to be checked. I also did a scan through Norton with nothing detected.

NO anti-virus can ever be relied upon to give 100% protection. None of them do, free or paid. Most only detect about 85 to 95% of all KNOWN viruses. When a brand new virus is released, NO signature-based anti-virus will detect it for several hours up to several days. And over 1200 new variants of viruses and other malware are created by the "black-hats" each and every day.

McAfee is above average in virus detection, but by no means the best.

I suggest that you Run both of these on-line scans. Both are free and excellent at detecting and removing malware free of charge. There is no need to un-install any of your current protections before using these.
