Why would a pc be fine before bed and not connect to the internet the next morning?

I had a few pages open on youtube and had the videos paused and fell asleep. when I woke up this morning it looked like my pc was in standby mode but the light on the tower power button was flashing and it wouldn't respond to anything.

I had to hold down the power button. the pc started up ok but won't connect to the internet.

I am on Windows ME but this pc has never done anything like this before.

I don't get a light on the cable card when I plug in the internet cable. I know my modem is ok because other computers in the house still connect. I know it isn't the canle because I have it hooked to another pc right now to test it and it is ok.

I did a system restore, scan disk , defrag and ran spybot search and destroy.

My Avast antivirus says I don't have a registration key entered for some reason. My key I put in 2 months ago should be good for 14 months. Please help!

You need to do some diagnosis. Try this:

1) Reboot the router/cablemodem, restart computer 5 minutes after, try again.

2) You should have an IP address given to you by your internet router/modem. Check what it is (via command is 'ipconfig', or you can right click on the link in your network settings).

3) Can other computers connect to the net?
