I have windows updates in the control panel and some are more than a year old; some are rarely used. the updates that i want to remove are the window updates; add/remove programs. The one's I want to remove are security updates that are most than a year old

you can go to your add/remove programs and check the "Show Updates" box at the top and they should be at the bottom of the list|||They were downloaded for a reason. Removing them exposes you once again to whatever they were meant to correct. Don't remove them!|||You could remove them but there wouldnt be much point! They are there for many reasons and uninstlling one can have a definite impact on the others. If you are going to remove one, you will have to disable windows update or it will just pop back up again also!
