How do you download DVD videos into moviemaker/ editing program?

I make fan trailers for movies and I want to know how you download video from a DVD onto Windows XP then into Windows moviemaker. I've been using a program called youtube to ipod converter and it had an option to download DVD video but it didn't work. I need to download the video from the DVD onto my computer then put it into moviemaker. I also need to find a way to import it so it doesn't take up a lot of memory if that is possible. If anyone can help at all it's greatly appreciated!
