Im suspicious of virus scanning programs..they could possibly attract viruses/ spyware/ trojans them
even norton/ mcaffee are targeted by viruses and similar harmful beasts.. so is there a point in getting any kind of protection for a mac knowing this? i think most people paying for those programs are too lazy to research in teh first place and it makes them feel "safe".. are they though?

Yes and no. Certainly, they block a lot of known "bad stuff", so there's a lot of good that they can do. At very least, they're better than nothing. However, the key word is "known" - a totally new virus will run rampant until the virus definitions are created/updated.
The problem comes from the fact that the big name AV companies use signature-based protection. Great for known viruses, but it's like the most-wanted pictures at the Post Office - not much use against new/evolving threats. Behavior-based protection is more akin to being suspicious of someone hiding in the bushes, no matter what their mugshot looks like.
Now, with these companies being big names, they're big targets. There's always folks out there probing them for vulnerabilities, looking to code virus to beat specific AV software. So, while I wouldn't say that they *attract* viruses, per se, neither are they immune.
